Foods to Help Reduce Glaucoma Risk

As glaucoma relates closely to the increased pressure in the eyes, maintaining the eye pressure is necessary to reduce the risk of glaucoma. Though generally the chances of developing glaucoma increases with age, regular monitoring of the eyes and taking a few preventive steps can minimize the risk and glaucoma treatment can have positive results. Lowering the blood pressure by maintaining a balanced diet is necessary to prevent glaucoma.

Food thus plays an important role in minimizing the chances of glaucoma. Follow a few simple steps:

  • Rise in the insulin level causes blood pressure to rise and possibly eye pressure as well. Since diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure go hand in hand with the risk of glaucoma; prevention should thus be taken by avoiding sugar, salt and grains as whole or in foods like breads, pasta, rice, cereal, potatoes.
  • Retinol- a form of Vitamin A lowers the risk of glaucoma. Foods rich in retinol like milk, liver, carrots, mangoes, egg yolk are advised.
  • Green and leafy vegetables like cabbage, spinach, broccoli, beans, green and orange bell peppers, papaya, squash, apricots also reduces glaucoma risk. Bell peppers arich in zeaxanthin, concentrating in the back of the eyes.
  • Vitamin D enriched foods like cod liver oil, oily fish are good for maintaining the pressure in the eyes.
  • Foods containing Omega 3 fatty acids like wild salmon, sardines, walnuts are beneficial as well. In case, you have problem with fish, you can go for an animal based Omega 3 fat supplements. This is because, a fat called docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) helps in protecting a healthy retinal function, particularly macular degeneration.
  • Zinc is also another important component to fight against glaucoma. In this regard, oysters, red meat, poultry, fortified breakfast cereals are advisable.
  • Intake of caffeine must be limited, as caffeine increases intra-ocular pressure.
  • Beneficial antioxidants found in flavonol-rich foods, like tea, green tea, chocolate along with red wine, is also recommended for lowering the risk of glaucoma.
  • Berries are extremely beneficial when it comes to maintain cardiovascular health. Intake of blueberries, strawberries, mulberries, blackberries, cherries, mulberries and even grapes are helpful for lowering blood pressure.
  • Avocados are good sources for eye nutrients like beta carotene, and vitamin C, vitamin b6 and vitamin E. It also contain lutein thus becoming one the most nutrient-rich fruits which help to maintain eye pressure, thus preventing the risk of glaucoma.
